MnSEIA Statement on the Tragic Death of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and the Shooting of Senator John Hoffman

ST. PAUL, MNToday, Minnesota lost an extraordinary public servant. Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman dedicated over two decades to serving our state with integrity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to building a more just and sustainable future. Her passing is heartbreaking, and her absence will be deeply felt across the state.

This senseless act of violence is a devastating and painful reminder that political violence has no place in our democracy. Advocacy can be passionate, and disagreements inevitable—but they must always be addressed through peaceful, respectful, and democratic means.

Throughout her career, Speaker Hortman was a steadfast partner to MnSEIA and a true champion of clean energy, climate action, and working families. Her leadership helped shape a stronger, more forward-looking Minnesota. Her legacy will endure far beyond her years of service.

Our thoughts are with the Hortman family during this unimaginable time. Our entire industry is hoping for a full recovery of Senator Hoffman and his wife Yvette.

Minnesota will never be the same—but we will honor Speaker Hortman’s legacy by continuing the work she so deeply believed in.
